Overview/Population
Myrtle Beach is a city that is located on the east coast of South Carolina. The city has a population of 27,109 according to the 2010 census. The Myrtle Beach Metropolitan area has a population of 329,000. Myrtle Beach is also a major tourist city. It is estimated that 14 million people visit this city each year.
Geography
Myrtle Beach has a total land area of 16.8 square miles. Over 99.8 percent of the city is made up of land, and 0.12 percent of the city is made up of water. The city is elevated 26 feet above sea level.
History
Europeans began to settle in the Myrtle Beach area during the late 18th century. However, Myrtle Beach was not officially founded until 1938. The city was originally named New Town. The name was changed to Myrtle Beach in 1957. That was the same year that Myrtle Beach became a city.
Climate
Myrtle Beach has a humid subtropical climate like most other cities in South Carolina. The city gets about 2800 hours of sunshine each year. Summers are long, hot and humid. The mean temperature in July is 91 degrees Fahrenheit.
Winters in this city are generally very mild. The mean temperature in January is around 57 degrees Fahrenheit. Snow is an extremely rare occurrence in this city. However, Myrtle Beach did get 2.8 inches of snow in the February of 2010. The city occasionally experiences tropical cyclones and hurricanes.
Education
Primary and secondary education is provided by the Horry County School District. This is the third-largest school district in the state of South Carolina. Coastal Carolina University, Horry Georgetown University, and Webster University are some of the notable colleges in Myrtle Beach.
